Compressive strength of stone-for various stones

Compressive strength of stone-for various stones

Hello friends, This is an important topic which also determines the strength of concrete.

For good building, stone crushing strength should be greater than 100N/mm2.

compressive strength: It is defined as the ratio of load by its cross-sectional area at which it fails.
Mathematically, compressive strength (P)=  load/cross-sectional area in N/mm2

The compressive strength of the stone is carried out to determine the compressive strength of stone.
To perform this test take 6 test blocks of dimensions 10cmx10cmx10cm are taken.

These blocks are then covered with plaster of Paris subjected to load in the compression testing machine one by one.

The values of loads at which the blocks get crusted are noted for each block and the average crushing load is calculated, Let its value be P.

As we said for good building stone compressive strength should be greater than or equal to 100N/mm2.

The table here gives compressive strength of different stones obtained from rocks in Newton per mm square.

Compressive strength of stone

Rock Stone Range of crushing Strength in N/mm2
1)Igneous rocks Basalt 150-200
Diorite 90-150

Trap 300-380
2)Sedimentary Rocks Laterite 2--4
Limestone 40-90
Sandstone 55-110
Shale 0.30-0.80
3)Metamorphic rocks Gneiss 150-200
